Lubbock tornado leaves over 10,000 without power as violent storms, large hail, and fierce winds hit West Texas on June 5.
The storm system triggered a tornado warning in Lubbock today, with reports of funnel clouds and debris scattered across multiple neighborhoods.
According to Lubbock Power and Light, there were 120 active outages impacting 4,465 customers in the city as of 8:47 p.m. The southwest, south, and southeast parts of Lubbock faced the worst outages, while other areas across the city also lost power. Crews have been deployed to begin restoration.
Meanwhile, Xcel Energy reported eight outages affecting 2,405 customers in Lubbock and Hockley County. Large portions of towns like Ropesville, Wolfforth, Meadow, and Lubbock lost power, and crews rushed to restore service in Levelland, Littlefield, and Smyer.
South Plains Electric Cooperative confirmed nearly 5,000 customers in Levelland and 500 in Lubbock lost power just before 9 p.m. following the line of storms that passed through Morton, Texas earlier in the evening.
The tornado warning for Lubbock remains in effect as the severe weather threat continues overnight. Authorities urge residents to stay indoors, avoid downed power lines, and monitor local alerts.
